some experiments with color composition over some old sketchbook drawings. trying to pit shapes and values against each other to see how they optically infringe on each other, or even verge on lost edges. the chromatic aberration accentuates the effect to make it more tangible, vs something more heavy handed like the outlining in the clouds and moon of the bottom one.

trying to work on harmonizing my digital and analog sketch processes. i typically like to use a 10-30% gray drafting marker, prismicolor or something, to lay in my forms real fast like, and kinda cloud gaze at it to see if something different/more than what i was intending jumps out at me. then i'll pencil in the forms i think make sense. lastly i'll run over it with a thin gel or micron pen to lay in some line before brush penning in some fat blacks.

i've finally got some PS brushes together that have a similar feel to all that.

a quick experiment with value. trying to create a sense of atmosphere and depth, not concerned with details. really just trying to understand how the values transition while guiding the moments of attention within the composition. when you squint does it come together? do you get a sense of hierarchy? those kinds of things, the details will come later.

from a design challenge at work, a redesign of Ant-Man.

A- is a straight up tokusatsu interpretation, something along the lines of Ultra-Man. I just really hate all the different helmet design I've seen, they're all the same thing, a big bubble head. Now he's got some cool tech to re-size with.

B- a different interpretation. I wanted to throw out the power to shrink, and strip him down to a wierdo who commands insects, like bug-Merman. he could assemble hundreds of tons of bugs to form a bug-golem around himself like a huge monster, and destroy things. that's way cooler than just being some tiny guy. it looks really uncomfortable, wanted to play up the 'ants in his pants' angle. he'd have to be villain.

looks like i've been a slacker on updates. not for lack of drawing, i've got a bunch of sketchbook stuff and tons of digital never-got-finished images sitting around. maybe i'll get back to them up here.

anyway, something new. i've been reevaluating my design process. typically i'm pretty rigid in my vision, i'll start of with something distinct in mind and build it up from there. so i started a few mech drawing working the opposite way around. pushing negative shapes with little to no detail till i get something interesting, then scribble onto it for possible interior shapes. then finally do a little cloud gazing at the mess and pull real mechanics from it. here's my first such attempt. we'll see what else comes out it...

a while back I helped out Tyler Kirkham by penciling some backgrounds for him. there were a few interior panels I did, and these 2 covers, the military tech in the top one and the buildings in the bottom one. of course they look a lot cooler after he brought everything together with his distinctive penciling style; the inks and color don't hurt either :)

So I was up in the Seattle area last week. It was way cool. Great scenery abounds.

Did a few sketches inspired by the surroundings.

I was able to meet up with and have a great Drink&Draw with a handful of amazing artists up there. Big thanks to them for a great time!

The bottom one of this pair is called, 'Rainier, not Fuji!'

I took the ferry from Bremerton to Seattle. A well spent hr traveling through the Puget Sound. Did these quickies from the bow, everything changes so quick that you've only got a minute to get things in place before it's all out of place.

I love the woods up there, everywhere up there. Lots of fun little trails and awesome trees of all kinds. This me running around going, 'Wow, look at that; hey wow! look at that!'

you might have noticed how simplified these sketches have become. just trying to wrap my head around overall shapes and rhythm without the details getting in the way. and playing with layering value, light on dark/dark on light, etc.

I realized the other day that I've never done a standard fantasy castle. I love architecture, especially castles, but I've never done the stock Disney/European/princess-hat-parapets type. So I turned it into a little study on projected-light and occlusion over the line drawing. Then just slapped on some texture for fun at the end.

this is more of a study than a speedpaint, for a piece i want to eventually put more time into. but right now just focusing on color and value in quick order.

it would be some kind of concentrically cut quarry that's been abandoned for hundreds of years, water filling in the bottom among the geometrically cut stone. the biggest man-made hole, Bingham Canyon Mine isn't far from here. i've always loved the scale and wanted to play around with the idea.

these were kind of accidental. i initially just layed out 4 boxes on the page, and when i got to the second box i noticed it could continue from the first box. so i went with that but also tried to make the images something that could also stand alone.

these portrait studies are teaching me quite a bit. i rush through them as fast as I can, only giving my self about 45min to an hour from start to finish. just trying to really codify things and hit the biggest marks that convey the image, with a focus on personality.

Jared recommended I do some zombies, skeletons, etc.; which got me thinking. I've been playing Left4Dead 2 a lot lately, and there's this level really reminiscent of the end of Zombieland at the carnival, complete with zombie clowns. and I realized that I've never drawn a clown! but I didn't want to do a scary clown, I just think they're way overly cliche' at this point. While I've never liked clowns, it's because I just don't find them funny. I mean really, who is honestly afraid of a stupid clown!? it's like being afraid of a Jugalo...

Privateer Press!

I've been working on character concepts for Privateer Press for the last couple months and one of the first characters I worked on has been published! You can see the miniature RPG figurine HERE
A big thanks to them for the opportunity to work on their awesome titles, and to the amazing sculptors and painters for breathing life into the design!

While I've never been much of a player, I've always loved the RPG genre for it's stories. I've always loved looking through sourcebooks for D&D or Robotech or whatever, and being in awe of the art as my imagination runs away with the characters.
I actually got a D in a high school art class, all because I sat next to a dude who'd always bring sourcebooks in to play with (instead of drawing). While he got a D for hardly every working, I spent the entire semester kicking out killer drawings of mechs, vampires, etc, based on what was in the books, and for which I would have received an A. But I always wanted to take them home and keep working them, but then never brought them back to school to turn in. I think my mom was pretty mystified when the teacher called to say that I worked hard everyday in class, and she loved my work, but that she never ended up seeing anything I had done, all while a huge pile of drawings sat in my room. Ah, back in the day...

So this dude is a Necromancer, some nobleman transformed by dabbling in the dark arts. I kinda saw him as a cross between Davey Jones and The Scarecrow.

Here were some of the initial sketches to get the creative ball rolling as we later defined the direction that fit best.

i just stumbled across this awesome pic. a couple months ago I was contracted to do a batch of illustrations for the Utah Museum of Natural History for their Proposition 1 campaign.

this lil dude made a great piece of art out of his lawn sign! awesome palette.

i was on vacation in Alabama last week doing some family schtuff, and to pass the down time i did a bunch of these quick landscapes.

i'm still experimenting with 'styles' trying to come up with a language that i like in terms of description and time, so you can see me waffling around from drastic minimalism to more detail heavy comps. i'll typically pick a 'theme' and do a round of it at a time, so typically the topmost one is the weakest (with a few exceptions) as i push for a better and different take on the same idea as i work down the page.

a few weeks ago I got together with my buddy Tyler Vance and his little boy Royston to do a sketch night kinda hangout. it was pretty rad, we downed plenty of pizza and soda, all the while dreaming up crazy things. Royston had made some cool Lego gizmos and i really liked this little goblin warrior dude, so I did a quick sketch of a character sans the blocks, and a few head iterations.

The guys wanted a more pinup-y face and a few other details changed, and then they decided to go with something else altogether for the album art. i think i'm finally starting to make some headway on these. there really is not replacement for doing a ton of them. i killed my last sketchbook, and got this new recycled paper one, it has this nice midtone that i want to use to push my value usage. this way i'll have to build up to white, instead of knocking everything down from white paper.

still trying to get my head around depth as level-of-detail and value. and it makes for a good study in composition in the mean time.

i'm always inspired by Tom Scholes's environment sketches, so'll you definitely notice some rip-offs there. i love his little scale figures, and always look forward to how they're re-contextualized. theres 'sword-guy,' 'bandito,' 'astronaut,' or 'lost-robo,' but i especially like 'wandering monk'. i'd like to think of my guy as a little Rick Steves though.

i can do about 4 of these in 2-3hrs (DrawNight@NoBrow, an evening of TV) and i've been experimenting with some different approaches.

so on the drive down to SDCC by my lonesome, I amused myself by checking out the scenery and taking blind point & shoot photos (as in I was driving, so being a photographer at the same time isn't a good idea as my wife pointed out, so with eyes on the road, I would just kind of point the camera in the direction i wanted without really looking at what I was taking a picture of).

Hit up San Diego Comic-Con this weekend! I've never been before (though wanting to go for years) and the experience was truly... unique. A great time meeting new people, seeing cool stuff, and genuinely geeking out. To say the least, it was intense, and a world all its own.

These huge wraps on the hotels were definitely impressive. Equally cool: the Klingon versions of the light rail signs.

I didn't go to any of the huge movie panels, just couldn't spare the hrs and hrs of waiting in line for them. But there were some cool booths on the Exhibition floor: Thor, Tron, Transformers...

so if you're wondering why the lack of posts lately, an explanation:
I got a stupid infection in my hand (left, non drawing hand) that had to be operated on. I was in the hospital for a few days hooked up to some heavy-duty antibiotics and watching show after show of Monster Garage, Mythbusters, and the like on their basic cable. It royally sucked. Maneuvering PS without the aid of hotkeys is like being kicked back to the dark ages, but thankfully the sketchbook doesn't require both hands, so I'll post some of that stuff soon.

it was back to the sketch book while the computer was offline. the basic concept comes from the hood of a tractor, that big angled hood thing. i ended up slowly moving away from it as the designs progressed.
also, as you may have noticed they are all 'gunless,' i wanted more of a 'sensory' priority to these vehicles like a forward spotter, and less 'bang bang.' there's room for some 50 cal guns, but i didn't want the long shell canons getting in the way of the other shapes.

sorry for the drought of images this last week. i've been sandbagging, bailing, and pumping water out from around the neighborhood trying to keep my house from going underwater. late snows, then straight into summer heat, bad combination when you live next to a creek (er a, 'crick'). but hey, it's Utah!

back in the day i was really into this comic called Red Meat, its quirky and dark, and from time to time pretty dang funny (well i think so anyay). they've got some awesome characters and the strips read really quick.

that last of the viking costume designs. obviously still struggling with turning the form via color temperature and color saturation.

but over all i think this little assignment served its purpose well. just look back at the first viking iterations and i'm somewhat ashamed to say that i thought they were all right when i did them.
it definitely goes to show that there is no substitution for logging the hours and putting yourself through the paces if you want to improve.
i find that too often (and art students embody this to a T) i get hung up in critiquing the artists i admire and that leads to the mistaken assumption that i could do something of that caliber, instead of putting the time into learning to do what they are already doing. ah well...

and here are the B&W comps that i colored over for my color experiments (first one on the left, most recent on the right) for those of you who'd like to pitch me a helping hand and critique this monkey.
