more

kindof ended up with a sci-fi-noir kind of thing. we'll see what comes next.

8.27.2009

ghost highway

the latest.
this one actually took about 3 sessions (1.5 hr ea). some days you just don't feel it y'know.
threw in a little John Erickson on the lights. actually my favorite moments in this one are the mountains and the horizon behind them.

8.22.2009

fig

a few random drawings over the last few weeks.
you know how just when you're feeling like you're making a few gains, everything suddenly seems to worse and more disparaging than before, yeah...

8.21.2009

graf

went and saw some cool paint down in Benjamin. the train was like a mile long, but we only saw about half of it. great variety of styles.

some details:

burn em down:

great juxtaposition:

8.12.2009

draw night

pizza!
just a little doodle from draw-night recently.
it's a new species of T-Rex with stilts for legs.

8.03.2009

industrial complex

came a cross some killer artwork by Brooks Shane Salzwedel. check it out.

and another plein air.
this one was pretty cool. Berk and i hung out under an overpass right next to the railroad tracks.

this is a little glimpse of my process. i don't quite have the hang of the paint and palette knife just yet, so i correct my mistakes digitally. it also gives me the versatility to try out a lot of stuff and have some fun with it. it's also a challenge to use the right brush so that the digital stuff won't draw a lot of attention to itself.

7.21.2009

graf

going through some old drawings the other day, i came across some more old graffiti design i did back in the day. so i thought i'd reinterpret them with some 3D action.

this is the design, now actually 3D instead of old faux-3D skills.

and then i just went nuts on it with a crazy camera angle to get some-kind of fortress-of-solitude-esque environment out of it .

7.20.2009

for the fishes

nother plein air i did Sunday.
of a cat-food factory in Murray. it's kinda nice to sit out in the sun all by yourself, the smell of fish stock in the air, trains running by every 15 min, some homie's boombastic bass being reduced to the buzz of his license plate rattling against his trunk.
i'm really getting a kick out of doing these, learning a lot even though i've yet to win a fight.

7.14.2009

concrete jungle

latest plein air. this one was about 1.5 hrs. trying to wrangle in the scrubby technique, and push small vs large definitions.

7.09.2009

sci-fi desert

now that i've got some time on my hands, i've been busting along getting work together for my portfolio.
this was based on a sketch done at good ole' Drawnight. definitely some things i like, and some things i don't. maybe if i squeeze enough drops of juice from enough paintings, i'll nail that one that will just boggle the mind with it's awesomeness.... one day.

figure dump

I've been taking a figure drawing class down at the Bridge Academy from Adam Ford. I've been down there once a week for 4 weeks now, only 2 of which Adam has been on hand to teach us (it's an every other kind of setup, the other weeks are studio & model time). It's really upped my game quite a bit. One of the things that Adam really stresses is speed; if you only have 5 min, get a drawing done, if you only have 20 min, get a drawing done, etc, etc. Draw, draw, draw. This only about a 3rd of what I've done down there.

20-40 min
30sec - 2 min

5-20 min

6.29.2009

plein

so i drug myself outdoors away from the computer to do some actual painting. i've been excited about doing some plein air stuff recently, and there so many cools spots all over the city. these are an evening and late afternoon of the same spot. acrylic, about 45 min a piece, and i've given myself the challenge of learning to paint with a palette knife. a new struggle begins...

6.25.2009

3D concept

somekind of cyber-bulldozer or something. just playing around a bit in 3D lately and mashing together shapes to see what comes out of the fray.

6.22.2009

comish

the final results of our 6'X8' commission, for a children's play room. learned a lot from it, think it turned out pretty swell for our various constraints. this wasn't either of our usual subject matter, but it was pretty fun. now i'm really looking forward to painting a lot smaller!

6.18.2009

speedpaints

some quick lil diddles.
"in the valley of the beetle cult'

"just some landscape"

6.16.2009

bigsmall city

doing some experiments with architecture and scale for something i want to do in paint. this was a 3D mockup and PS paintover.

6.15.2009

it's notta skirt

went to the Highland Games this weekend. fun, cold, wet, but nothing like a piping choir to warm the spirits. got some awesome action shots of the athletes, check out these poses:

6.01.2009

workin it

my buddy Berk Frei (everything is way old on his blog) and i have a little job of painting a 6'x8' canvas for a client. a storybook scene for a kid's playroom. light-hearted, fun. check out the mock up:

we're working down at Captain Captain Studios, which is having an 'open studio night' this Fri. it'll be fun and a good chance to see alot of great art from the Salt Lake scene.

5.26.2009

Caddy 2015

been working on goods for my portfolio lately, and a moment of inspiration struck me like lightning on a clock tower. for me hotrods are the perfect mechanical juxtiposition, one foot in style and the other in raw mechanics.
i was liking this design but felt it needed something more... hover conversion.

5.20.2009

lotus position

some experimentation trying to push in a new direction.
i'm trying to take up some advice i recieved recently: "Learn something new from every drawing. There are no mistakes, only experience. Who cares if you mess up your drawing. Who wants to look at your stuff anyway?"
words to live by.

5.18.2009

kick-back

some plane designs i've been kicking around for awhile. i had the idea of doing something that was very sci-fi-ish in silouette and design, but juxtiposing it with something more retro like some kind of alternate throwback. and i've always liked the design of Crimson Skies, if you've ever played it.

5.11.2009

scratch n smudge

figure from weekend before last. some hiccups with the nu-pastel and some lines i couldn't pull back up, so i worked the charcoal pencil on the face for better control. think i'm getting a little better at rendering faces, but i'll keep on keepin on...

5.06.2009

hover

still foolin around with the hovertank concept. don't know if i like it.

5.04.2009

stuff

a concept i've been working on for a personal project. a house for a phoenix character. so there's the strong birdhouse look, mashed with elements of swedish and nordic architecture, and a little gypsy wagon thrown in. this would be a blast to model.

just a fun abstract 3D piece. it's actually a set piece from a previous project, but from a wierd POV and a super distorted camera lense. but, interesting shapes and forms caught my interest as i was spinning it around.

4.29.2009

and more

closing in on a final design, working out some details

4.24.2009

more costumes

going for something a little more 'comic-booky'

4.13.2009

monumental

i've mentioned my buddy Tyler Vance here before, but he's finished with his Masters up at Utah State. his thesis show was pretty killer and he's finally got pics posted.
http://tylersthesis.blogspot.com/

and check this out: the centerpiece, yours truly.

other than being a 'rockin' (heh heh, oh...) Stonehenge kinda thing, there's a hidden story.
the whole thing is the relic of a monument long ago built to commomorate the victories of a certain hero. he defeated/killed all these people, represented by the surrounding still life images. and his portrait is the center piece (yep, me as a figure reference, sporting some killer Raiden stylings). pretty sweet.
thanks Tyler. good work.

4.06.2009

costume

a character sheet illustrating different costumes.
i came across this pose (doodling is a journey) and really liked it. some animated proportions, jumping, and a strong 'belly-button OUT!' look to it.

4.03.2009

curious rocks

a random rock doodle from DrawNight + a little tweakage in PS

3.30.2009

nekkid

another figure drawing from this weekend. busted out the graphite to see what i could do.

3.27.2009

landscapes

some quick experiments with white on toned paper.

3.23.2009

hotarodd

trying to work on my 'finishing skills.' and i've always loved hot-rods.

3.16.2009

portrait

figure drawing from last weekend. the battle rages on...

mold tastic

cleaning out the fridge a few days ago i came across these gems. i thought they made for some really interesting textures.

japanese mushrooms. they don't go bad, they just grow smaller shrooms! but i didn't have any tiny noodles to put them with.

this multi-colored extravagence was previously some dill dipping sauce, but we got all sorts of cool stuff out of it. who knows how many diseases it could be anti-biotics for.
